This is one of MCA's largest tournaments of the year.  There are six two day tournaments for the more experienced players.  I will probably be playing.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! For my students rated under 1000, there are also two beginning tournaments, each of these is a one day tournament.  You can register for either of these events directly with the MCA, visit www.michess.org for details.

2018 Thurston Chess Tournament

This is the 15th annual Thurston Chess Tournament sponsored by the Thurston PTO.  This is a great first time tournament for K-5 students, with several tournament sections based on grade.  There is also an advanced tournament for experienced players grades K-8.  (the K-8 tournament will be USCF rated, the beginner sections will not be rated)  For complete details, visit:

2018 Michigan Scholastic Team Championships
K-3, K-5, and K-6

Instructor Ray Garrison is recommending the Michigan Elementary Team Championships.  If your child wishes to play, you should complete registration by FRIDAY to be determined.  (you may register by clicking the button below) This is an optional event, but it is a lot of fun and highly recommended. 

 Entry Fees and Membership Fees:  Cost per player is $49 (pending) for current students (includes team entry, team room, coaching, and administration fees).  Non-current students may still register for $69 (pending), but are not guaranteed a spot on the team.

MCA membership is required for all events.  $15/year with magazine, $10 without, $25 family membership.

USCF
membership is also required for 4th grade and older.  You have four options:  For all players 12 and younger, $25 includes 6 issues of Chess Life for Kids (or $17 on-line version)For any player 15 and younger, $35 includes all 12 issues of Chess Life (or $22 with on-line version)

 PLEASE be sure to check that your memberships are current!  If you do not buy a membership from this web page now, you should double check your membership expiration dates.  You can check your memberships at www.michess.org and www.uschess.org

  Brief Tournament Information:   Schools will form teams of four players and play other schools in a five round tournament.  The best team score in each division (K-3rd and K-5th and K-6th  ) will be considered state champions.  Mr. Garrison will email you complete details and information about one week before the event.   Disclaimer!  Mr. Garrison has the final say concerning who will be on which team, the board order, and in case of five player teams who will sit out each round.  The goal is to get everyone who registers onto a team.  This can sometimes be tricky and sometimes Mr. Garrison has to make difficult decisions.  The decision he makes can not be argued!

This will be an all day event.  The Rounds begin at 9, 11, 1, 3, and 5.   Players and parents should bring books to read, playing cards, maybe even a small TV or some other pastime.

2018 Michigan Junior Championships
K-3 and K-5 Saturday,

This is the annual individual state championship.  Recommended for all students who have tournament experience or are enrolled in one of Mr. Garrison's intermediate or advanced chess classes.  For this event, students should register directly with the MCA.  Please visit www.michess.org for registration information.

Okemos Scholastic Chess Tournament, Saturday April 28, 2018


● 5 Rounds
● Time Control G-30 (each player has 30 minutes to make all of their moves)
● Play only students in your own grade (separate tournaments for each grade K-6)
● Grades 7-8 may be combined into one section, depending upon registration
● Trophies to all players who score at least 3 points (usually over 40% of the players get a trophy!!)
● All players receive a souvenir from chess vendor Sal Chehayeb.
● Beginners encouraged to participate
Players in grades 6 and up need to bring boards and sets. Younger players will be provided with boards and sets. All players should bring a clock if they have one. (Clocks are NOT required for this tournament).
Please bring “soccer mom” chairs for seating in the waiting area. A few regular chairs will be available, and tables will be available.

Rounds are scheduled for 11:30, 12:45, 2:00, 3:15, and 4:30. Awards ceremony at 5:45. Round times will be accelerated if all games have been completed.
